ExpressVPN
ExpressVPN remains the most polished consumer VPN, and its audit record is unusually broad: KPMG on no-logs across four separate years, plus Cure53 and Praetorian on TrustedServer and the Lightway protocol. The drawback is the Kape ownership question -- the same parent company also owns CyberGhost, PIA and a stable of VPN 'review' sites, which is a real conflict of interest even if the engineering is sound. It is also the most expensive option here at list price, and the refund guarantee has more exclusions than the marketing suggests.
Where it is strong
Non-technical users who want an app that just works on every platform, including routers and smart TVs, with the deepest audit coverage of the app code itself.
Where it is weak
Ownership by Kape Technologies -- a company whose earlier incarnation, Crossrider, distributed adware -- is a legitimate reason for caution, and Kape also owns CyberGhost, Private Internet Access and several of the 'independent' VPN review sites that recommend them. The 30-day refund is also first-time-users-only and excludes App Store and Google Play purchases.
